objective: atherosclerosis disease, inflammation and malnutrition have strong association with end stage renal disease (esrd). diabetes mellitus (dm) is the most commonly esrd causes. diabetic nephropathy (dn) could be associated with inflammation. type 2 diabetic patients with advanced nephropathy show the highest levels of inflammatory markers. this study was designed to determine the association between malnutrition–inflammation–atherosclerosis (mia complex) in diabetic patients with peritoneal dialysis. materials and methods: fifty seven diabetic patients on peritoneal dialysis were investigated and demographic variables (age, gender, bmi and dialysis duration), inflammatory markers (cholesterol, albumin and crp) were measured in routine protocol. cimt (carotid intima-media thickness) and plaque number were evaluated by b-mode ultrasonography (7.5 -10 mhz probe) in supine position. results: the mean age (standard deviation) of patients was 51±17.3 years. the mean time on dialysis was 26.12 ±25.42 (range 4–120) months. the mean of imt was 5.98±1.17 mm and mean of plaques were 1.80±2.01. results of analysis of variance (anova) showed that older patients have more carotid plaques (p-value= 0.000). there was a significant relation between serum albumin and number of plaques (p-value=0.043). cimt and number of plaque revealed significant correlation with age, serum albumin and dialysis duration (p<0.05). conclusion: our findings showed, in diabetic patients on peritoneal dialysis, carotid atherosclerosis (cimt and number of plaque) is associated with some inflammation, malnutrition markers.

Glucose and Insulin Response to Peritoneal Dialysis Fluid in Diabetic and Nondiabetic Peritoneal Dialysis Patients.

A postprandial increase in blood glucose in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients with diabetes was observed in our previous study using continuous blood glucose monitoring. The response was observed in diabetic but not in nondiabetic PD patients. In addition, the response was reduced when patients used icodextrin; glucose absorbed from the peritoneum was responsible for the postprandial increase i...

Nutrition supplements in dialysis patients: use in peritoneal dialysis patients and diabetic patients.

Malnutrition is common in dialysis patients. Low serum albumin is associated with increased mortality. Nutrition supplements have been used with success in dialysis patients in increasing serum albumin levels. The National Kidney Foundation of South Carolina Nutrition Supplement Program provides grants for supplements. We studied the effect of supplements on albumin levels in peritoneal dialysi...

Comparison of Marital Satisfaction in Hemodialysis and Peritoneal Dialysis Patients

Alternative kidney treatments, including renal transplantation, hemodialysis (HD), and peritoneal dialysis (PD), are administered when severe kidney failure occurs and the kidney can no longer function. The present study compares different dimensions of marital satisfaction in HD and PD patients so as to assist physicians and patients in choosing their appropriate treatment. This cross-se...

Risk factors for mortality in diabetic peritoneal dialysis patients.

BACKGROUND It is well established that the survival rate of diabetic end-stage renal disease patients remains the lowest among all primary diagnoses probably because of higher prevalence of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) associated with diabetes. This study was designed to evaluate the impact of CVD and other risk factors individually or in combination on mortality in diabetic peritoneal dialysi...

Nutrition in diabetic patients undergoing continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis.

I n the pre-dialysis stage, the nutritional management of diabetic patients with chronic renal fail ure involves mainly caloric and protein intake and control of blood sugar. These aspects are very important because severity of hyperglycemia is correlated with the rate of progression of chronic renal failure, while strict glycemic control can markedly diminish the likelihood of nephropathy and ...
